Message From Marian

Dear Friends,

We are really looking forward to your reaction to this issue of M Magazine. It has been a lot of fun to put together.

I am sure lots of you have heard of Howie Hua, a math guy you may have seen on TikTok or Twitter, whom I had the privilege of meeting this year. We had a great time talking, and I am excited to be able to share his perspectives with you in our feature interview.

The “Open Questions” in this issue focus on number and algebra. As always, we have brand-new questions for each grade band.

In this month’s “Things We Love” section, we explore the instructional routine Two Truths and a Lie, with fun examples for several grade levels.

Speaking of instructional routines, our feature article shares some favourite instructional routines of math teachers, including examples of how these routines could be used at many levels.

In the “What’s This?” section, we familiarize our readers with a professional development model based on what is traditionally called a lesson study.

We also have new “Ask Marian” questions in this issue. There are several questions and responses about assessment along with questions about fractions, measurement, and multiplication.

Our “How-to Video” this month might surprise you. We talk about the way teachers read mathematical statements to students and the impact we might have on students based on how we “read mathematics” to them.

This month’s “Shareables” involve number, measurement, and spatial puzzles at the K–2 level. At the Grades 3–5 level, the activities involve area, perimeter, multiplication, and division. At the Grades 6–8 level, the activities involve probability, circle measurement, multiplication of fractions, and coordinate graphing.

The “Let’s Dig In” videos in our M Live! section this month delve into what conceptual understanding looks like. What sorts of questions do we ask to see if students have conceptual understanding?

Our final Educator of the Month feature showcases a wonderful teacher from Saskatchewan, Kayla Cristo, who was a delight to talk to.

We always love to hear from you, so please stay in touch and continue sending your Ask Marian questions. Please also feel free to send us an email with any general feedback.
