Engagement

Transcript: One of the words that we hear a lot these days is “engagement,” and I think different people have different ideas about what it means. So, for some people, it just means kids look busy—they’re doing stuff, they’re not bugging you, they kind of seem to be involved in something or other. I’m just hoping we mean more than that for engagement. What we want is [for] them not just to be busy but to be learning stuff and to be thinking about good stuff. So, are they problem solving? Are they reasoning? Are they making sense of math? And so I think engagement is not just about [ensuring that] they’re participating or [that] they’re not staring into space. I think it really means that they are thinking mathematically—and we’re getting them to do that thinking—[and] that they’re interested in what they’re doing. So, we do want engagement, but I think we don’t want engagement on [just] anything; we want engagement on valuable things.
