Open Questions With a Twist
Reap all the benefits and more of already versatile open questions by adding an extra challenge, or “twist,” to further discussion and deepen students’ understanding. You could present the original open question to your students first, followed by the twisted version, to see how their answers change, or you could present just the revised question. The beauty of this strategy is that you can twist the same open question in many different ways, depending on which mathematical concepts you’d like to draw attention to.
