Things We Love

Golden Times

We love this activity because it shows just how creative students can be when we give them a chance to come up with their own unique ways of applying their mathematical thinking to the world around them. Whether you’re teaching younger students who are just learning about time and clocks or older students up to fourth grade, you can use this open-ended question about “golden times” to get kids thinking and talking about number and measurement concepts. This is also an opportunity for students to make connections to pattern rules and geometry. Not only are there no wrong answers for hesitant students to worry about, but there’s also lots of potential for those who want to extend themselves. Watch this video to find out more and see if it’s time to give this fun activity a try!

Which One Doesn’t Belong?
Are you looking for an engaging, thought-provoking activity that will encourage participation from even your most reluctant students? Well, look no further! A well-crafted “Which One Doesn’t Belong?” question can be used to kick off a mathematical discussion on any topic or concept, at any grade level, and can even help students hone their critical thinking and justification skills. Although there are many variations of this strategy out there, you’ll hear from Marian in this video why she believes one particular approach might be the most beneficial for you and your students. So, if you ask us, we’d say that “Which One Doesn’t Belong?” activities definitely belong in the math class.
